Starting Again with Music and Heart – A Journey Back to Piano

By Zhen Tao
There are seasons in life when we pause things that once brought us joy—not because we’ve stopped loving them, but because life simply gets in the way.
That’s what happened with me and piano.
For a while, I stopped practicing. Work picked up, life got busy, and my lessons faded into the background. But the silence left something missing. I missed the peace. I missed the focus. I missed that small, sacred space of time where it was just me and the music.
And now—I’m back.
After a long break, I’ve returned to piano lessons with new energy and a deeper appreciation. I’ve been learning with Pop Band Music Academy for the past two years, and I can’t say enough about my teacher, George. He’s incredibly talented, endlessly patient, and has always believed in me—even when I didn’t believe in myself.
I wasn’t the most consistent student in the past. But this time, I’m showing up differently. I’ve realized that we don’t always get “later.” Life doesn’t pause until we’re ready to chase the things we love. So I’m learning to make space for music—not as a luxury, but as something essential to my well-being.
Because playing piano isn’t just about notes and technique. It’s about joy. Expression. Healing. And doing something just for me.
If you’ve been thinking about picking up an instrument—or picking it back up—this is your sign. You don’t have to be perfect. You just have to start.
